Between 35-55 hours
of international travel later (depending on delays), we
arrived in Palau and began our work at Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC).
We have been
busy unpacking our gear and setting up our lab spaces. Between all three labs,
Kemp, LaJeunesse and Warner labs, we checked 18+ bags/action packers weighing
over 700 lbs! Plus, the Warner lab already shipped a bunch of gear for our experimental
set up this trip and all of the stored equipment already at PICRC since the
last trip. Science requires quite a bit of baggage.
Tim and I set
up our dueling scanners in preparation of all of the coral surface area
measurements that will be taken in the coming weeks.
We practiced scanning
some coral fragments Hannah and I collected abundantly growing along PICRC’s concrete
wall. I have never seen such high coral cover or such coral diversity! They don’t
call this the Coral Triangle for nothing, but I was still in awe after jumping
in the water.
Stay tuned for
more updates on the experimental tank set up in our wet lab space!
Below are some views surrounding PICRC! :D
